The Seattle PI today had a nice article on Mike, “Two state sports figures mourned“.
Warchol grew up in Erie, Pa., where he attended Cathedral Prep and Gannon University. His sister, Shannon, said sports numbers and statistics came naturally to her brother.
“Mike had a photographic memory,” she said. “He was very kind and loved his family more than anything.”
Warchol worked for the past six years to bridge the rivalries between his online recruiting site and the local print media by successfully building relationships with newspapers across the state.
Warchol was working on his preseason football advances hours before he suffered a pulmonary embolism after going to sleep.
The Seattle Times also had a brief mention.
In the Columbian high school sports blog, there was another very nice article on Mike.
A memorial event for Mike Warchol will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, at Columbia Little League in Vancouver’s David Douglas Park.
Warchol, who ran the high school sports Web site WashingtonPreps.com and was a coach and board member for Columbia Little League, died in his sleep early Monday from a blood clot in his lungs.
He was 35.
Mike is survived by his wife, Kim, and her three children.
“Baseball, that Web site, and the kids were his life,” Kim Warchol said.
